Inaugural concert for both the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s new year and newly elected Detroit mayor Coleman Young at the Masonic Auditorium in Detroit, MI.
This concert with the Detroit Symphony is in two parts. Diana Ross sings during the second half of the concert. It’s the first time she performs in Detroit in 5 years.
January 17
Single “My Mistake (Was To Love You)” (duet with Marvin Gaye) released (#19 on pop charts).

7th Annual Image Awards of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP awards) at the Hollywood Palladium.
Diana Ross presents a special corporate award to Ted Ashley, board chairman of Warner Communications. Entertainment was provided by Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Johnny Nash and the Dramatics.

American Music Awards ceremony (broadcasted live) held at the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood.
Diana Ross is nominated in the favorite female vocalist category (other nominees: Roberta Flack, Helen Reddy) and in the best LP category for “Lady Sings The Blues” (other nominees: Seals & Crofts' "Summer Breeze" and War's "The World Is a Ghetto"). Diana Ross wins the award of best LP (Helen Reddy wins the award of best female vocalist).

16th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, at the Hollywood Palladium (aired live on CBS). Diana Ross is among the presenters and presents the record of the year. Diana Ross is nominated in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category for “Touch Me In The Morning” (lost to “Killing Me Softly" by Roberta Flack, other nominated female are Bette Midler, Anne Murray & Carly Simon). “Touch Me In the Morning” is also nominated in the best arrangement accompanying vocalist(s) category (lost to “Live and Let Die” by Paul McCartney & Wings).
16th Grammy Awards ceremony, Diana Ross presents the record of the year.  
March 27
NARM awards announced at the banquet in Hollywood, Florida. Diana Ross is nominated in the best-selling female category (Bette Midler won, others nominees: Roberta Flack, Carole King, Helen Reddy & Carly Simon) and in the best-selling female soul artist (tie winners: Roberta Flack & Gladys Knight, other nominee: Aretha Franklin). In the best-selling movie sound track category, are nominated: “Lady sings the Blues” in which Diana Ross starred, “American Graffiti”, “Deliverance”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” & “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” (“American Graffiti” won).

46th Academy Awards ceremony at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (Los Angeles).

Diana Ross, Burt Reynolds, David Niven co-host the ceremony. She is the first African-American woman to co-host the Academy Awards Ceremony. Diana Ross introduces Alfred Hitchcock to present the Jean Hershold Humanitarian Award.

The Toronto Star (January 4, 1974 issue) mentions 2 concerts on April 8 & 9 at the Massey Hall in Toronto but no other mentions of those concerts can be found and they probably never took place.

Diana Ross participates to a six-day backgammon transatlantic tournament on the Queen Elizabeth 2 organized for 32 of the world's top players and celebrities. Contestants sail from New York to Southampton, England, to compete for $70,000 in prize money. Among those invited to participate are Russian Prince Alexis Obolensky, U.S. champion Barclay Cooke, and a host of celebrities including Hugh Hefner, Bobby Riggs and Diana Ross.
